The Functions of a Computer Operating System

The Functions of a Computer Operating System

The operating system is the core software component of your computer. It performs many functions and is, in very basic terms, an interface between your computer and the outside world. In the section about hardware, a computer is described as consisting of several component parts including your monitor, keyboard, mouse, and other parts. The operating system provides an interface to these parts using what is referred to as "drivers". This is why sometimes when you install a new printer or other piece of hardware, your system will ask you to install more software called a driver.

Ex. Electric shocks or burns
Computer recycling is important to the environment as computers are kept out of landfill and recycled. 1800ewaste will collect and recycle all of the electronic products they collect and recycle 95-98% by weight. All of the data on the computers and laptops which are recycled can be guaranteed that is destroyed and certificates will be issued. 1800ewaste will only use accredited computer recyclers and electronic waste companies which are governed by ISO140001 standards. Computer recycling is above ground mining and it is important to recycle as much as we can to minimize open cut mining as much as we can.

Internal hardware components, cost, image and function

Motherboard

ASUS P8Z68 DELUXE Intel Z68 LGA 1155 ATX Intel MB

COST
$285.00

FUNCTION
In personal computers, a motherboard is the central printed circuit board (PCB) in many modern computers and holds many of the crucial components of the system, providing connectors for other peripherals. The motherboard is sometimes alternatively known as the mainboard, system board, or, on Apple computers, the logic board. It is also sometimes casually shortened to mobo

CPU

Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40 GHz 8MB Quad Core LGA1155 CPU

COST
$339.00

FUNCTION
The central processing unit (CPU) is the portion of a computer system that carries out the instructions of a computer program, to perform the basic arithmetical, logical, and input/output operations of the system. The CPU plays a role somewhat analogous to the brain in the computer.

RAM

COST
2 GB - $ 20.00

FUNCTION
Random-access memory (RAM) is a form of computer data storage. Today, it takes the form of integrated circuits that allow stored data to be accessed in any order with a worst case performance of constant time. Strictly speaking, modern types of DRAM are therefore not random access, as data is read in bursts, although the name DRAM / RAM has stuck. However, many types of SRAM, ROM, OTP, and NOR flash are still random access even in a strict sense. RAM is often associated with volatile types of memory (such as DRAM memory modules), where its stored information is lost if the power is removed. Many other types of non-volatile memory are RAM as well, including most types of ROM and a type of flash memory called NOR-Flash.

Power Supply

COST
$10.00

FUNCTION
A power supply unit (PSU) supplies direct current (DC) power to the other components in a computer. It converts general-purpose alternating current (AC) electric power from the mains (110 V to 120 V at 60 Hz [115 V nominal] in North America, parts of South America, Japan, and Taiwan; 220 V to 240 V at 50 Hz [230 V nominal] in most of the rest of the world) to low-voltage (for a desktop computer: 12 V, 5 V, 5VSB, 3V3, −5 V, and −12 V) DC power for the internal components of the computer. Some power supplies have a switch to select either 230 V or 115 V. Other models are able to accept any voltage and frequency between those limits and some models only operate from one of the two mains supply standards.

Card expansions (i.e. sound card, video card, etc.)

sound card
COST
$35.00

video card
COST
$ 80.00
FUNCTION
The expansion card (also expansion board, adapter card or accessory card) in computing is a printed circuit board that can be inserted into an expansion slot of a computer motherboard or backplane to add functionality to a computer system via the expansion bus.
Also, there's bunches of fans (mainly the CPU fan, chassis fan, and graphics card fan)

Hard Drive[s]

COST
1 TB - $90.61

FUNCTION
A hard disk drive (HDD; also hard drive or hard disk)[2] is a non-volatile, random access digital magnetic data storage device. It features rotating rigid platters on a motor-driven spindle within a protective enclosure. Data is magnetically read from and written to the platter by read/write heads that float on a film of air above the platters

CD/DVD disk drives

COST
$40.00

FUNCTION

A CD/DVD is an optical disc storage media format, invented and developed by Philips, Sony, Toshiba, and Panasonic in 1995. DVD originally stood for Digital Versatile Disk, or Digital Video Disk. The acronym was dropped after DVD proved to have more uses than just storing video content. DVDs offer higher storage capacity than Compact Discs while having the same dimensions.
